How You Can Build a Minimalist Wardrobe in 5 Simple Steps

Do you ever find yourself running out of closet space or worse, have a lot of clothes but still think “I don’t have anything to wear?” If you’re starting to use your bed as additional closet space; Love, Yves has you covered with tips on how to organize your clothes without a closet. If it’s the second one, what you need is a style detox. Creating a capsule wardrobe seems to be all the rage nowadays but it can feel overwhelming. So we’re breaking it down for you. Here’s how you can build a minimalist wardrobe in 5 simple steps:

A nice tip is to hang all your clothes with the head of the hanger facing you. Whenever you wear something, put it back in your closet and turn the head of the hanger to face the inside. At the end of the month, the clothes with the hanger head still facing you, should go directly to the Bye Pile, according to this guide by No Side Bar. If you haven’t worn it in a month, chances are you’ll never wear it again.

This step is something that most people tend to skip. After sending some clothes to the Bye Pile, categorize your clothes into DAILY WEAR, WORK WEAR, ACTIVE WEAR and SPECIAL OCCASSIONS and figure out what you spend the most time in. If you have too many clothes for a category you barely spend time doing, you guessed it – TRIM IT DOWN!

This is where you get some leeway. Most of us juggle between different roles and it’s best to have clothes that are appropriate for each of the hats that we wear, pun intended. For each type of clothing, have one casual pair, one dressy pair and one something-in-between.

Yes, you can still shop. No, do not go overboard! You didn’t spend all that time cleaning out your closet and fixing your life just to go back to old habits. REMEMBER THE MAGIC NUMBER 3! If your closet needs more items that fit the Rule of 3, invest in the following clothing:

  • Tank top – something that you can wear on its own or under sheer tops
  • Short-sleeved shirt – For the days when you know you’re going out and about
  • Long-sleeved shirt – A warmer cousin of the one above
  • Blouse – Something that you can wear to work or thrown on with jeans for a casual, put-together look
  • Blazer – A quick way to jazz up your outfit
  • Cardigan/sweater – Cute and functional
  • Jeans – Dark jeans can look smart but still be very comfy
  • Black Skirt – A more feminine version of the dark jeans
  • Black Dress – never underestimate the power of the LBD!

The key really is to invest in pieces that you can mix and match. BNY Jeans Philippines has a number of basic t-shirts for women that are perfect for a minimalist closet (and a minimalist budget!) The key is to find simple yet fashionable clothes and base the rest of your capsule wardrobe around them.

Change can be scary and you don’t have to do it all at once. Take your time but don’t stray too far from the goal! Don’t buy things unless it passes the MAGIC NUMBER test. Find the fun in it!
